The study of soil foundation of Riga port passenger terminal

The work was carried out in order to identify the heterogeneity and structure of the soil foundation of the passenger berth and to contour the place of suffosion processes manifestation with the removal of small soil fractions in the river, which are the cause of failures and subsidence of embankment solid asphalt pavement. GPR sections obtained with different frequency of sounding pulse and different type of antennas ambiguously reflect the characteristic features of the soil massif structure in embankment foundation.

The works revealed a sharp difference in the structure and physical properties of the soil maassif in the southern (old) and northern (new) parts of the passenger berth. Under the surface of the ancient pier pitted by bomb craters in the southern part of the pier lie dense natural alluvial and moraine soils, while the base of the northern part of the pier is composed of bulk soils. GPR section displays strong diffracted waves associated with technological wells and the foundation of the pedestrian landing gallery.
